ORGANIZATION
Aviation Systems Division (AF)
The Aviation Systems Division conducts research and development in two principal areas: air traffic management and human-in-the-loop flight simulation. Air traffic management researchers are developing new concepts to safely enable three times as much air traffic twenty years from now as compared to today. The division’s flight simulation capability contains the world’s largest flight simulator, a high-fidelity 747-400 simulator, an advanced transport simulator, and an air traffic control tower simulator to support Space Shuttle crew training, future planetary landers, and a host of aeronautical applications.

Terminal Area Air Traffic Management Research Branch (AFA)
The AFA branch researches and develops solutions to increase the throughput of the airport surface and the immediate surrounding airspace to meet the future needs of the U.S. air transportation system.

Automation Concepts Research Branch (AFC)
The AFC Branch focuses on concepts and technology to improve safety, efficiency, and capacity for the nation’s air traffic management system. Emphasis is on separation assurance and traffic flow management in the en route domain. The branch also conducts spacecraft handling qualities research.

Aviation Operation Systems Development Branch (AFD)
The AFD Branch develops and tests software for air traffic management research using real-time data. AFD also conducts research in areas such as improving aircraft trajectory prediction algorithms and increasing airspace capacity using concepts based on aircraft capabilities. The branch provides staff to the North Texas Field Site located at the Dallas-Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center to conduct and support research in collaboration with the FAA.

Aerospace Simulation Operations Branch (AFJ)
The AFJ Branch provides human-in-the-loop simulation facilities and services for aeronautical and space research applications. The branch also conducts research on spacecraft handling qualities as well as training and simulation technologies.

Aerospace Operations Modeling Branch (AFM)
The AFM Branch focuses on studies of future concepts for improving the efficiency and safety of managing traffic in the air transportation system. These studies measure system-wide benefits of concepts, demonstrate the integration of different concepts, and investigate changes of concept parameters. In support of these studies, the branch develops models and simulations of these concepts and tools for analyzing air traffic management data.

Flight Deck Integration and Simulation Research Office (AFX)
The AFX Office is presently vacant.
