The ATMAL's ATC Simulation Laboratory, containing several air traffic control stations, has been created to provide air traffic controllers with the look and feel of an actual air traffic control facility. An air traffic simulator is used to create and “fly” the individual aircraft through the simulated airspace. A separate room is used by researchers to control an air traffic simulator to provide aircraft targets for CTAS. The Audio Communication Simulation is used to simulate the radio communications used between air traffic controllers and pilots. Combining these three subsystems provides NASA with the ability to operate CTAS in a realistic ATC environment using similar hardware used at air traffic control centers.
